Defoe a possibility?

Idle speculation only, but there were some interesting comments from Harry Redknapp over the weekend when he said that he would not be able to bid for Jermain Defoe because a substantial bid had already been placed:

"I think they've a massive offer from somebody for him, so good luck to them - I paid about £9m,"
Defoe was also left out of Portsmouth's side against Arsenal yesterday, with manager Tony Adams citing it as a tactical decision, yet Portsmouth look to be in selling mode.

With all of the speculation about Craig Bellamy or Michael Owen, could Defoe sneak under the radar?

A proven goalscorer at Premier League level, he possess pace and an eye for goal. For me, he could be a better bet than Roque Santa Cruz but may not be enough of a 'presence' for Hughes's liking.

vote it up!

I agree that Defoe would be quality. Some newspapers are linking the bid to Aston Villa, however. Would we currently be able to steal this player out from under the noses of a potential run at Champions League football? Sure, we did it with Robinho, but that was a unique circumstance of him NEEDING to leave his club, only having two suitors, and one of those suitors got caught making their relationship with the selling club untenable.

It may be argued that, given Portsmouth's situation, again the player HAS to leave. However, would Villa be as arrogant in their dealings as were Chelsea?

Looking a bit forward (if you'll indulge me), while none of us would have been wishing for a draw prior to the match, the manner of the draw is a blessing. Coming away without points with two weeks until the next league match would have been devastating to team morale. Now, the team will feel like they have a platform to build from going into what is another crucial set of 5 matches (before we go to Anfield):

Portsmouth - away
Wigan - home
Newcastle - home
Stoke - away
Middlesbrough - home

With the possibility of new signings, home form at least being respectable, Stoke being a game you circle as an away chance to pick up points on the league, and Portsmouth in turmoil, we can clearly see the crucial nature of the coming fixtures.

As a player, imagine going into these games with the "We did it again; we can't put two results together" albatross around your neck.

rather defoe than owen and bellamy.

bellamy doesnt score much at all and owen is past it, he cant sustain any fitness, despite his obvious ability in front of goal

defoe has a great nose for goal, he is small and nippy and will feed off our midfield.
