Come and get a free phone

The kind folks over at Sony Ericcson, official sponsors of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa are offering readers of Bitter and Blue the chance to win a FIFA branded SE W995 handset worth £500.

It doesn't end there though. No sir. Within one of the boxes given away by Sony Ericsson will be a golden ticket. The finder of the golden ticket will have the chance (amongst other nifty Sony and FIFA World Cup related prizes) to win an all expenses paid trip to South Africa including tickets to all of their countries games.

To enter, simply send the answer to the ridiculously difficult question 'Who won the 2006 World Cup?' to me at bitterandblue@hotmail.co.uk, stating 'Competition' in the email title.

The winner will be picked at random from all the entries received following the closing date.

Closing date is August 23rd 2009 and the winner will contacted (and published on the blog) shortly after.

Bojinov joins Parma

Manchester City striker Valeri Bojinov is back in Serie A after joining newly-promoted Parma on loan.

The 23-year-old Bulgaria international endured an injury-hit spell at Eastlands, making just three Premier League starts in two years.

Bojinov did look a talented prospect when fit, but the summer arrivals of three big name strikers means his playing time would have been severely limited next season.

>>skysports.com

We are seeing more of these types of deal, where a loan is mutually beneficial to both sides.

Clearly his opportunities would have been limited during 2009/10, and the likelihood is that he is not entirely fully fit following his injuries.

From watching him during his time in Serie A, he is an absolute bull of a player so it is something of a surprise that he has been so fragile during his time with us, especially given how innocuous his injuries were.

I'm pleased this is a loan deal as it does still leave the opportunity for him to put his injury woes behind him, kick-start his career and return fully fit next summer. With a Parma side returning to Serie A and lacking strikers he should see plenty of action and the hope his he can get 25-30 games under his belt.

Elano departs

Manchester City can confirm that Elano has completed his transfer to Turkish side Galatasaray.

The Brazilian joined the Blues from Shakhtar Donetsk having been signed by Sven-Goran Eriksson just before the start of the 2007/08 season. He had an immediate impact with both goals and a string of influential performances.

Elano found the going a lot tougher as opponents increasingly targeted him as one of City's main threats, but despite more limited appearances under boss Mark Hughes he still scored 18 times in a total of 80 appearances for City.

He joined the famous Istanabul club last night and everyone at Manchester City would like to thank Elano for his services and wish him the very best of luck for the future with both his new club and with Brazil.

>>mcfc.co.uk

One that is sure to divide opinion.

There has been rumour around Elano's future for a little while, but the confirmation of the move (and to Galatasary) came a little out of nowhere and certainly speedier than some of the more protracted incoming moves.

In a lot of respects it is a shame that Elano has gone. Undoubtedly a wonderful talent, he leaves us with some fantastic memories of his abilities and it is another example (in a long line throughout history) of function and endeavour triumphing over style. Personally I think there would still be a role for him in the squad over the course of the season, but experience tells that he Elano is not the patient kind.

Let us not kid ourselves totally though. As sublime as Elano could be, over his two seasons there were large pockets of the season where he was unproductive and contributed little, even looking disinterested. Some would argue that this was mainly the return from the second half of the 2007/08 season onwards.

Logic does dictate that it is a sensible move therefore. Looking at our likely line-up, Elano would not feature in the strongest starting XI (and would anyone truthfully suggest otherwise?) given we are likely to have a three featuring Barry, Ireland and a holding player. Elano on the sidelines as we saw is not condusive to the 'team ethic' and no way did Mark Hughes want him around as a distraction if for the majority of time he would be kicking his heels.

As we are progressing towards the vision of where Hughes wants the squad to be (both in terms of success and the make-up of the team), there are going to be casualties along the way. It is disappointing when they are players such as Elano, capable of providing wonderful moments on a football pitch, but perhaps ultimately, nostalgia will make his loss appear greater than it is actually is.

Lescott bid rejected

Everton have rejected Manchester City's latest offer of £18m for Joleon Lescott.

City contacted the Club with an increased bid for the central defender but the Blues have turned down the offer.

Earlier this summer, the Eastlands club had a bid of £15m rejected, with David Moyes declaring that no player will leave Everton this summer without his approval.

Lescott is currently in the USA with the rest of the Everton squad.

A Club statement read: "Everton Football Club can confirm it has received an offer of £18m for Joleon Lescott from Manchester City and that offer has been rejected outright."

>>evertonfc.com

With the recent arrivals and departures that we have seen, I do think Hughes is one central defender short of concluding his transfer business for the summer. Lescott is clearly the final player he wants, and I'm sure he would want a deal concluded by early next week.

Everton - quite rightly so - look to be playing hardball, and with Phil Jagielka absent from the start of the season and no direct replacement for Lescott (so far) why wouldn't they be?

Perhaps they are stalling to squeeze a higher fee, or to bide themselves time to land a replacement. Or perhaps both.

What I think is clear from what we have seen during the whole Lescott 'business' is that it will likely need him to take the initiative if he does want to leave.

And so far we have seen no sign one way or the other of his intentions.

Toure signs

Confirmed by the club earlier today.

Mark Hughes on the signing:

"I am delighted to welcome Kolo to Manchester City. It is no secret that we have been looking to strengthen our defence, and in Kolo I feel we have recruited a world class player. He brings a wealth of Premier League experience from his seven seasons with Arsenal,” said City boss Mark Hughes.

“Kolo has been a central figure in a very strong Arsenal team for many years, and I have been an admirer of him for a long time. He is strong, quick, reads the game well and will be an influential figure in the dressing room.”

And Toure himself:

"It is always difficult to leave a place where you have spent the last eight years and had good times but I felt the time was right for a new challenge and I am still at an age where I feel I am at my peak and will play my best football."

"For me it was time to move but only for the right club and I feel that Manchester City is that club. The ambition here is clear to see and is big. Everyone knows this club is moving and that is really, really important".

And so Hughes finally lands the first defender of the summer spending spree as he continues to overhaul the squad from the one he arrived to just over twelve months ago.

Despite some of the protestations from Arsenal fans who have commented on previous Toure posts, I don't think we are landing ourselves a player who is over the hill. And certainly not a mercenary. Far from it.

Toure is still only twenty-eight years of age, with plenty of mileage left. As far as Hughes is concerned, he fits his player prototype perfectly. Strong, athletic and possessing pace, he also has Premiership experience.

Wenger has spoken of having seven centre-halves which is why he could afford to let Toure depart, but Toure is not at the bottom of that pile. Not if that list includes Djourou, Senderos and Silvestre.

That is not to say Toure is John Terry though. Whilst the players we have added follow a pattern, they are what I would describe as 'second tier' players. Good, or very good players, but lacking that real top quality. However, our squad is virtually unrecognisable from when Hughes took over and every position has been strengthened (both from a talent and importantly a mental perspective) from what was inherited.

A key point to note though is that Toure undoubtedly strengthens our squad, and he will step straight into the starting line-up. At the same time (and crucially) his arrival does also weaken Arsenal's squad.

With all at the club appearing to be making a concerted push for the top four this is an important point, as of the sides currently with a hold on those positions Arsenal are undoubtedly the most vulnerable.

Onouha signs new deal

Some positive news amid fears that he could be part of any deal to land Joleon Lescott is that Nedum Onouha has signed a new five-year contract with the club.

A huge plus for the club the past season or so is the emergence of Onouha into a genuine first-team player, thankfully free of the injuries which stalled his progress since he broke into the side.

Onouha himself seemed positive about his own future, despite the prospect of increased competition for places:

“I am really, really happy,” he declared. “This is a great place for any young player to be. Hopefully it will be the start of another good five years for me and for the club. This is a season that we will be looking right towards the top of the table.

“Who knows how far the club can go. If you look back five years who would have expected the club to be in the position it is in now. We feel anything is possible.

“There is a brilliant mix here in terms of the squad. There are a lot of big signings that have been made but there are also plenty of lads who have come through the Academy and I think that is an important thing.

“We all have a lot more experience now and I think we are the type of players teams need to be successful. If you look at the recent history of the clubs that have won trophies they have all had a home grown element.”

Bojinov set for Serie A return

Another story beginning to be widely reported this lunchtime is one that Valeri Bojinov is set to move back to Serie A with newly promoted Parma, with Bojinov's agent commenting:

"If City should be ready to release Valeri on loan, as I know they categorically ruled out a permanent sale, then the most logical solution would be Italy.

"He has received offers from Spain and Germany, but Valeri feels that he is Italian and would have no problems settling in."

Interesting that it may be a loan though rather than a permanent deal. If this was the case, I imagine we would be on the hook for the majority of his wage.

Further Lescott bid reported

Sky Sports News understands Manchester City are to make an improved bid for Everton defender Joleon Lescott within the next 24 hours.

Money-rich City had a £15million offer for the England player rejected by the Toffees earlier in July after confirming their long-term interest in the 26-year-old.

>>skysports.com

It was also suggested that Lescott may well be set to tell Everton that he wants to move.

I have no issue as such with increasing an offer for Lescott per se, given you would expect his transfer value to be higher we are likely to pay for Kolo Toure.

However, Nedum Onouha should not be part of any deal to land him. Whatsoever.

Toure to undergo medical

As expected, the possible transfer of Kolo Toure has progressed since news broke this afternoon that we were in talks with Arsenal and The Guardian reports that Toure is set to leave Arsenal's training camp this evening to ahead of undergoing a medical:

Touré is expected to fly directly into Manchester to take a medical examination tomorrow and finalise the personal terms of a contract that will see him join the growing band of players at City who earn in excess of £100,000 a week.

He will become the second Arsenal player to move from Arsenal to City this summer, following Emmanuel Adebayor for a combined outlay of £39m.
This follows earlier comments from Arsene Wenger, in which he conceded that Toure is set to move:
"We will see what's happening in the next 24 hours, nothing is decided yet.

"We have seven centre-backs and I am in the position where I have to play some in midfield but of course Kolo is a very good player and we will see what will happen in the next 24 hours."

It seems all but confirmed that Toure will join, to possibly create a partnership alongside Nedum Onouha. Whilst Toure is a good player, he is not a great player, belonging (I believe) in that second tier of players and whilst a good addition he is obviously overpriced and you do have to question just how much of an upgrade he is over Onouha or Kompany in that role.

His loss will be felt by Arsenal (as will that of Adebayor) and to dismiss his potential departure as selling on a player who is on the slide is stretching matters somewhat, and whilst Wenger is confident he will be easily replaced, I'm not so sure.

Looking at Arsenal's options, whilst the capture of Vermaelen is a potentially good one, it is still potential and there is a big risk involved with such a move. His loss and the experience he brings will clearly benefit us, whilst weakening Arsenal at a time where they do not appear to making the progress sides around them are doing.

Who next?

Dusting himself off following the rejection by John Terry, it seems that Mark Hughes has picked himself back up and got himself back in the game if today's reports are anything to go by.

Attention appears to be focusing back on both Joleon Lescott and Kolo Toure, with Toure the stronger rumour and the suggestion seems to be that a bid either has, or will shortly be lodged.

Jack has mused over the merits of adding one or both of the pair, and whilst Toure seems the likelier in terms of current progress, my own preference would be to add the one player - Joleon Lescott, namely because Nedum Onouha is a better player than either. A partnership between Lescott and Onouha also looks a stronger one than Toure and Onouha, two players of similar styles as opposed to the more rugged, defensive qualities of Lescott.

A point to make about bringing in multiple defenders is, that whilst strengthening is required, the rotation in defence is not as prevalent as in other areas (which is why we can carry half a dozen attacking players) and looking at the top sides in the Premier League, they are built on a solid, consistent partnership at the back, so carrying too many defenders is by far from an ideal situation.

Terry says no

Finally, we can draw the whole pursuit (saga) around John Terry to a close.

The morning brought reports which suggested that a deal for Terry (plus moves for KoloToure and Joleon Lescott) would be concluded by the end of August, but this afternoon finally brought clarification from Terry that he would remain at Chelsea:

"I am totally committed to Chelsea and always have been," said Terry. "Chelsea have also made it clear to me consistently that there was never any intention to accept any kind of offer. When you are linked with any club, or with a manager [Mark Hughes] who I have huge respect for, it will always make headlines, but me leaving Chelsea was never a possibility.

"I know there has been comment that I should have made a statement earlier. However, throughout this period there have been numerous discussions between myself, the owner and the Chelsea board and we all agreed that the timing of any statement would suit everyone involved in those talks, not any outside influences or agendas. What is clear to me following those discussions is that Chelsea's ambition remains as high as ever."

Terry would clearly have strengthened an area of the side that does not reinforcing, and the drive and determination he possesses is an asset Hughes dearly craves in players, yet there was always something uncomfortable about the idea of Terry arriving at the club.

As big an asset as he could have been, he strikes as a fairly unpalatable character, and arguably, his best (or better at least) days are beginning to be behind him.

A move for either Toure or Lescott now seems likely, and both players would strengthen the defence, and would come in to the club with something to prove - an asset always worth having in a player.

The downside to Terry remaining at Chelsea of course is it still leaves us waiting to land the real big name the club hierachy sorely wants. Having been rebuffed by Kaka, Eto'o and now Terry - all world renowned players, it does mean that whilst being tempted, the upper echelon of players in the game will still be reticent about joining until we can break through and persuade that first real profile player of world stature to take the plunge.

Kaizer Chiefs 1 City 0

A disappointing end to the tour of South Africa as we were defeated 1-0 in the Vodacom final by the very side we had defeated by the same scoreline earlier in the week.

Mark Hughes continued to ease players back into the fray with Adebayor, Dunne, Onuoha, Craig Bellamy and Shay Given given their first starts of the tour, whilst Robinho was introduced for the second half.

Whilst any victory is welcome, I'm sure Mark Hughes would have been more focused on answering certain questions as he formulates his plans heading into the new season.

Given the chopping and changing of the line-up over the three games it is difficult to draw too much from individual performances, but from what I did see it is clear that Gareth Barry is going to be an integral part of our midfield. He does look a real leader and someone who is able to control the game.

Whilst both Martin Petrov and Shaun Wright-Phillips started the final, both struggled to make a big impression and I don't see Hughes often favouring a 4-4-2 line-up as such, which could be bad news for the pair.

I'm certain that he will adopt the 4-5-1/4-3-3 line-up with Robinho and Tevez supplementing a main striker. This will also allow a centralmidfield trio of Barry, Ireland and de Jong (given Vincent Kompany's absence at the start of the season).

Of course Wright-Phillips and Petrov on the bench does provide plenty of options, but it could be a frustrating time for both.

In goal and defence, the positions appear to be more or less set should no further additions arrive, but the fact that Tal Ben-Haim featured twice in South Africa reinforces the need for defensive additions.

Evans move confirmed

Confirmation of the move following the news yesterday that a fee had been agreed.

Sheffield United boss Kevin Blackwell on Evans:

“He’s a young striker and we are delighted to have won the race for him because there was significant interest in him from two Premiership clubs and two from the Championship,” he told sufc.co.uk.

“We think the lad has a bright future. He is still maturing, still learning the game, so there is more developmental mileage in him which will benefit this club in the long term as well.

“With plenty of first-team experience for City in the UEFA Cup last season he is an exciting prospect and City were reluctant to let him go.”

Caicedo to Sporting

Confirmation of what had been widely predicted:

FELIPE Caicedo is set for a move to Sporting Lisbon.

The Ecuadorian striker has fallen down the pecking order at Eastlands since the arrival of Emmanuel Adebayor, Carlos Tevez and Roque Santa Cruz in the summer transfer window.
Caicedo himself said of the move:

"My objective is to play and to demonstrate that I can triumph in Europe," Caicedo told skysports.com.

"City have many forwards who have arrived this summer and they have complicated my presence.

"But to be with a club like Sporting Lisbon is a personal challenge to me.

"I am very happy to be able to play in the Champions League. Portugal is a good championship and I do not believe there will be any problems for me adapting my style."

As I wrote the past day or so, it is a good move for all concerned. Whilst the Portuguese league may not be of the highest quality, he will be tested and it should improve him as a player far more than the reserves here at City will.

He also has the advantage of a potential Champions League campaign (should Sporting overcome Twente in the qualifiers).

I slowly warmed to Caicedo over the course of last season. I still think Sven vastly overpayed for him, and at times he resembles a bull in a china shop (or even a headless bull in a china shop), but there is definitely something there with him.

Whether he now gets the opportunity to ever show that with us is another question, but a loan deal rather than a permanent one suggests Mark Hughes may think he could turn into a useful player further down the line.

Nedum going nowhere

A positive note to come out of the club was confirmation from Mark Hughes that there will be no chance that Nedum Onouha will be leaving the club:

"Nedum is one of our finest young players. "He was outstanding for us last season, and I am not looking to move one of our prize assets away from City."
There had been the odd whisper that Everton were looking at the possibility of taking Onouha - possibly as part of a deal that would see us land Joleon Lescott.

Thankfully, there doesn't appear to be any substance in it, as although Lescott would be a welcome addition to the side, if it meant sacrificing Onouha then it would be a huge mistake. Injury free during 2008/09, Onouha turned in a hugely impressive season.

Hopefully free of his injury problems, there is no reason why over the course of the next year or so he can't prove his undoubted quality and go on to force his way into the England set up.

Evans fee agreed with Sheffield United

From Sky Sports:

Sheffield United have agreed a fee with Manchester City for Ched Evans, Sky Sports News understands.

The Blades have been targeting the Wales international all summer and they finally look to have got their man.

Whilst Evans featured a number of times last season (making sixteen appearances), our attack was a problem area during 2008/09, and while he put in plenty of work (often in a lone role), Evans did look to lack the necessary quality to be a long-term Premier League striker.

It is a good move both for Sheffield United, who get a player with a proven record at Championship level (and also with Wales), and for Evans himself, who will be playing regularly after falling well down the pecking order this summer.

Interestingly, Sky Sports are suggesting the fee is 'in the region of' £3 million - which is more than I thought we would ultimately get for him.

Terry set to stay at Chelsea

This mornings papers all appear to be following the same lead; that John Terry is set to 'reject' a move to us in favour of remaining at Chelsea. From Dominic Fifield in The Guardian (who is in the US covering the side):

John Terry has reached an agreement in principle to remain at Chelsea despite persistent interest from Manchester City, with the England captain expected to reaffirm his commitment to the club publicly before the weekend.

Terry maintained his silence on City's interest in the wake of today's comfortable 2–0 victory over Jose Mourinho's Internazionale at the Rose Bowl, in which he was one of two players to feature for the full 90 minutes. But he departed the stadium saying he would speak "very soon" on the matter. Both Peter Kenyon, Chelsea's chief executive, and Roman Abramovich, the club's owner, are in the United States as the club's four-match tour progresses, with Terry having spoken to both over the last few days.

I did have a suspicion that Chelsea's continued public insistence that Terry was 'going nowhere' was an indication that they were concerned that the players was giving some serious thought to the possibility of moving. It does however seem all but certain Terry will remain.

As to whether Terry gave serious consideration to the possibility of opening talks is anybodys guess, and should he sign a new (and improved) deal at Chelsea, I don't think he is likely to admit as such anyway.

Whilst Terry would unquestionably have been a huge addition to the club, and perhaps the high profile, 'name' signing we have been looking for, by and large the feeling was largely ambivalent to his potential arrival. The sums of money were reportedly vast, and here was a guy who seemed the epitomy of the modern Chelsea, to the extent that to even consider him playing elsewhere was largely unthinkable.

I would expect us now to step up the pursuit of Joleon Lescott, as it is clear that we do need to reinforce the central part of the defence. It has been interesting to note however the performances of Ben Mee on the tour to South Africa have been extremely encouraging.

Tevez suffers injury

Carlos Tevez may return from Manchester City’s pre-season tour of South Africa without any competitive football, with his bruised heel threatening to rule him out of the final match in Johannesburg on Saturday.

Tevez aggravated the bruising when he undertook his first training session in the Kings Park stadium on Monday evening and though it is not a serious problem - City’s medical staff would have patched him up with a pain killing injection for a competitive match - Mark Hughes is weighing up whether he wants to take any risk.

The allure of Sven

You are maybe thinking just how does Sven do it?

He departs his previous three jobs with a hefty pay off but he just keeps on bouncing back, landing on his feet in the next highly paid gig.

But when Sven, with his bookish, middle-aged looks and seeming lack of personality has enough of the silver-tongued charmer about him to seduce the likes of Ulrika and Nancy between the sheets, is it any wonder that a succession of Chairman and Chief Executives fall over themselves to appoint him?

And why Notts County, when after managing in Serie A, the Premier League and at international level he could have his pick of countries and club around the world?

Further departures reported

Further vestiges of Manchester City's Sven Goran Eriksson era seem likely to be swept away, with a loan deal under discussion that would take striker Felipe Caicedo to Sporting Lisbon and a possible move to Racing Santander for Javier Garrido.

Caicedo, whom Eriksson signed from the Swiss club Basle 18 months ago, led the line for City against Kaizer Chiefs at Kings Park Stadium here last night but Sporting are keen to wrap up a deal as soon as possible.
>>independent.co.uk

As I posted yesterday, now that the bulk of the incoming transfers has been completed, we should begin to see departures from the club over the coming weeks as sides look to strengthen their squads ahead of the season.

Both Garrido and Caicedo have been previously linked with moves away from the club, and it would not be a huge surprise if either moved on this summer.

Garrido is very much second choice at left back and will find his opportunities limited behind Wayne Bridge, and given he failed to beat out Michael Ball last season, Mark Hughes clearly does hold him in high esteem.

More interesting is Caicedo. He did win over a number of people over the latter part of 2008/09, when he did show plenty of promise. He is very raw indeed, but has the potential and physical tools to be a potent part of an attack so perhaps a loan deal, rather than a permanent move away from the club is the most suitable option.

Kaizer Chiefs 0 City 1

A useful run out earlier this evening from the parts I caught. With pre-season games, it is hard to judge precisely what you can take from the game but our opponents - although they must be the smallest side I have come across - looked to be a bright, lively side, so Mark Hughes will be pleased that there was some intensity to the game.

The 'big guns' were still by and large on the sidelines, although Gareth Barry started slotted in well with Stephen Ireland in midfield. He looks as though he has plenty of energy and will cover large areas of the midfield. Pablo Zabaleta also offered plenty throughout the game. It was a mixed side, but youngster Ben Mee played for the second game to suggest he has a positive future.

Also impressive was to see Martin Petrov back out on the pitch, looking intense and brooding out on the left. It would be a real shame should he be squeezed out over the course of 2009/10.

We have a final game in South Africa this coming weekend, but judging from some of Mark Hughes's comments earlier in the week, the game may come a little early for the likes of Tevez, Robinho and Adebayor.

Elano to move on?

The Manchester City career of Elano is hanging by a slender thread, with the Brazil international left out of the club's trip to South Africa and seemingly top of their clear-out list.

The Bundesliga side, Cologne, have approached City about taking the 28-year-old on loan and though he is understood not to be keen on the idea Elano may soon have to resign himself to a new challenge.

There has also been interest from La Liga, with Real Zaragoza among the clubs linked with him. Elano thrilled Eastlands with his early displays under Sven-Goran Eriksson in the 2007-08 season but has lacked the work ethic to impress his succcessor, Mark Hughes. His public insistence that he warrants an extension to his current contract, which expires in 2011, has not helped either.

>>independent.co.uk

It's no secret that Elano and Mark Hughes had a fractuous relationship during 2008/09, with Elano's winged being clipped followed an impressive first season in 2007/08 (and an excellent first half of that season in particular).

It was even reported in The Independent piece that he was left out of the South Africa touring party, but this is a little lazy journalism as even a quick google search shows he will arrive a week late (along with Robinho) after playing for Brazil following the end of the Premier League season.

Still, whilst Hughes doesn't have to move players to balance the books following his outlay this summer, a bloated squad in certain areas will be a hinderance, and looking at how we may well line-up this season, it could even be argued that Elano may not feature on the bench at full strength.

Should that be the case, he could well be a headache the club could do without, so I would expect Hughes to be receptive to the possibility of Elano moving on, and following the recent arrivals, we may now start to see players moving on

Tapping up

If Chelsea are contemplating reporting us to the Premier League for tapping-up John Terry, then Mark Hughes's latest comments would hardly have helped smooth relations between the two camps:

'We made a bid for John but we tried to keep it under the radar.

'Chelsea allowed the bid to enter the public domain and ever since I have been answering questions on the matter.

'There was no issue that needed to be raised.'

What is interesting though, is exactly what constitutes 'tapping up' in the eyes of the Premier League. Section K of the Premier League handbook specifically concerns approaches to players:

SECTION K

PLAYERS’ CONTRACTS

Approaches to Players

1. A Club shall be at liberty at any time to make an approach to a Player with a view to
negotiating a contract with such a Player:
1.1 if he is an Out of Contract Player, or,
1.2 in the case of a Contract Player, with the prior written consent of the Club (or club) to
which he is contracted.

2. A Club shall be at liberty after the third Saturday in May in any year and before the 1st July
next following to make such an approach to a Contract Player:
2.1 who will become an Out of Contract Player on that 1st July; and
2.2 who has received no offer from his Club under Rule M.17.2 or
2.3 who has received but has declined such offer.

3. Any Club which by itself, by any of its Officials, by any of its Players, by its Agent, by any other Person on its behalf or by any other means whatsoever makes an approach either directly or indirectly to a Contract Player except as permitted by either Rule K.1.2 or Rule K.2 shall be in
breach of these Rules and may be dealt with under the provisions of Section R.

4. For the purposes of Rules K.2 and K.3, “Contract Player” shall include a player who has entered into a written contract of employment with a Football League club.

The difficulty here is distinguishing precisely what is covered under Rule K 1.2 and Rule K.3. From what we know, we have made two legitimate bids for Terry, which Chelsea (quite within their rights) have turned down.

The key phrase appears to be '...makes an approach either directly or indirectly to a Contract Player'.

As it stands, it does not appear that we have made a direct approach to Terry, but what does determine an indirect approach?

Both the club and Mark Hughes have been very vocal and public in their courtship of Terry, and this in itself could be argued as an indirect approach. However, and as Mark Hughes stated, he interprets this as merely answering questions that have been posed to him.

Again, as far as we know, there has been no agent or third party contact between ourselves and Terry to 'register' our interest. You would have to be naive though to think that in the course of negotiating and completing transfers that such action on occasion does not occur.

But whilst a direct approach is easy to prove (as with the case with Chelsea's meeting with Ashley Cole whilst he was an Arsenal player), an indirect approach? Short of having documentary evidence to link a club with a third party in which they confirm their intentions, there is very little the Premier League can do to pursue the matter.

For this reason, unless we have been totally underhand (and stupid), I don't see the Premier League pursuing any investigation.

Pre-season friendlies

I really do find it hard to rouse myself for pre-season games.

Sure they sate an appetite for football after a couple of months off but the trouble with these games is that sides are really going through the motions. They lack the pace, structure, intensity or competitiveness that usually make the game so appealing.

And they feature Tal Ben-Haim.

Adebayor signs

The signing of Emmanuel Adebayor was finally confirmed this afternoon - interestingly the clubs' twitter account leading the way in confirming he was heading to Manchester to sign.

Clearly Arsenal fans are glad to see the back of him, with us seemingly getting our hands on a player who by comparison made Nicolas Anelka a terrace hero. Arsene Wenger believes that it was these same fans who were in part responsible for him leaving:

'We have lost a great player and we wish him well. He's done extremely well for the club. I don't believe that last season he got enough support. That was playing a part in my mind and in his mind, certainly, as well."
Adebayor is not a dud though. His record is impressive and he is the 2008 African player of the year. He has the type of presence in attack Mark Hughes craves, and the attributes we were so lacking during 200/09. We have clearly not picked up the reincarnation of Lee Bradbury here.

I've written plenty before on Adebayor, and whilst it may not have been the most obvious signing, it is a good one. If you ask some basic questions about what he will bring it backs this out; Did we urgently need a striker? No. Will he score goals? Yes. Will he make us a better team? Yes. Does he add something different? Yes.

Mark Hughes clearly thinks so:

“Emmanuel has been one of the top forwards in the Premier League since he arrived from France and we are delighted he has agreed to come and join us. Along with the other signings we have made in the last two windows he will greatly enhance our ability to compete with the top sides. His arrival is another clear indication that we are determined to augment the players we have here with the best of international talent.”

“He adds vital balance and power to our attack. He has everything a top forward needs. He is versatile, powerful, quick and agile on the ball. I am looking forward to working with him as are the rest of the staff. He will definitely add a new dimension to our play. I have been a great admirer for a long time.”

Crucially, if we have designs on the top four then he weakens the side who are realistically the side we can overhaul. Despite the accusations levelled at him, Adebayor will not be easy to replace for Arsenal.

As to where he fits in to the side, it does allow a variety of options for Hughes but I suspect he will look for a three pronged attack with Adebayor in a central role supported by Robinho and Tevez coming inside.

A huge improvement on last season.

Adebayor reportedly undergoing medical

After some doubts were reported this morning, this afternoon it is believed that Emmanuel Adebayor is heading to Manchester to undergo his medical ahead of completing his transfer from Arsenal. Adebayor was also absent from Arsenal's side for their friendly this afternoon.

Both The Guardian and Sky Sports are now carrying the story, and now the official MCFC twitter feed is also stating Adebayor is heading upto Manchester.

Lescott bid reported

Manchester City have responded to David Moyes' public insistence that he will not sell Joleon Lescott by trying to call the Everton manager's bluff with a first official offer for the player. The Eastlands club made a bid of £15m this afternoon.

The offer is likely to be rejected but Everton are aware that City have the financial muscle to follow up with an improved financial package. The biggest spenders in the English game have been encouraged to think that Lescott is keen to join a club who seem determined to buy their way into the Champions League.

>>guardian.co.uk

Reports of the bid were also carried on telegraph.co.uk, whilst David Moyes has again stated via liverpooldailypost.co.uk that Lescott was not for sale.

When news of interest in Lescott was first reported, it was quickly dismissed then by Everton but at the time I wrote that if Lescott marches into David Moyes' office and demands a move, there is little that Moyes realistically can do to prevent him going. Such is the way with football in these times.

Whilst money will be a factor for Lescott, like Gareth Barry before him he will have to decide if perhaps his present club have reached a limit on what they can achieve in the league (and this is not to diminish what Everton have achieved in recent seasons) and that the possibility of Champions League will be more likely attained with ourselves.

I'm not sure where this leaves any interest with John Terry, but I would suspect Mark Hughes would dearly love Terry and Lescott as his partnership next season. It does seem Terry is on Chelsea's pre-season trip to the USA, and although Peter Kenyon re-iterated that he is not for sale I don't get the feeling the door has been entirely closed on this.

Delay to Adebayor move

Emmanuel Adebayor has asked for more time to mull over his proposed move from Arsenal to Manchster City, a transfer he fears could lead to strong criticisms of his motives in his native Togo. The striker's misgivings are such that City have been forced to delay plans for a medical while he considers their offer of a salary worth in excess of £150,000 a week.
>>guardian.co.uk

Judging by the comments from Arsenal fans on here the past few days, news that the transfer may not progress could see a sharp increase in calls to the Samaritans. I would be surprised though if a Premiership footballer would be stalling over a move for fear of how he would be perceived by accepting a large hike to his wages. Or perhaps some do have a conscience after all.

In contrast with the article in The Guardian, according to The Mail, far from requesting further time to deliberate, the issue may well be to do with money with the club (perhaps sensing we are the only realistic bidders) imposing some sort of ceiling on what we are prepared to offer.

None of us are party to the inner workings or the machinations of transfer negotiations so whether there is a real issue between Adebayor and ourselves over wages, whether we are close to agreeing a deal or whether Adebayor is hoping our firm interest flushes out other interested parties into making a bid nobody knows.

What is clear is that Mark Hughes wants to sign him and Arsenal want rid, so if no other side does come forward we are certainly in a position of strength. Negotiations (including the work permit hearding) do seem to be at an advanced enough stage though to suggest Adebayor is receptive to moving so the smart money must still be on a deal ultimately being concluded.

I do agree with Jack though in that the move does have less of an appeal to it than that of the signing of Tevez (or indeed Barry), and should it fall through, we are still blessed with enough talent in attack.

But, given that the attack though have a better look to it with Adebayor involved, and with the continued pursuit of John Terry from Chelsea, have the club sensed that rather than the steady approach, that there is a real opportunity for Champions League qualification thsi forthcoming season?

Hughes defends spending policy

"We understand how people may view us at a time in the world when times are hard for a lot of people and the economics of the world skew to a negative slant.

"But football sometimes bucks that trend, and we're in the business of trying to make our club better and we have to spend significant amounts of money to get significant players.

"That has never changed, irrespective of the economic situation in the world. We haven't had the benefit of Champions League money over a long period of time and we haven't had the success to generate the large amounts of money you need to build a squad that is capable of winning trophies."

>>telegraph.co.uk

Hughes hits the nail on the head here. The club have received continued critcism over the past few months for transfer bids, fees and wages paid and offered to players.

The sums of money that are being banded around may be astronomical, and indeed unpalatable, but from the clubs perspective it is something that at this stage in our progress is regarded as a necessary evil.

Whilst the club has a history, it does not have a recent one in terms of tangible success, so whlst there is a clear target in terms of what is being aimed at, it is at a distinct disadvantage in comparison to the top four and other top sides around Europe (something we saw with the efforts to sign Kaka).

Whereas the likes of Chelsea or Manchester United can offer competitive high end wages, they also have the recent success in terms of trophies and Champions League qualification that we are unable to. Instead, we have a vision that can be offered, and whilst it is an ambitious and impressive one (which Gareth Barry was clearly sold on) for us to compete at this stage with the likes of the top four we are going to have to offer above and beyond the 'going rate' in terms of wages.

The idea being that you can then secure top calibre players to get to the Champions League and win trophies. Then, and only then, can you entice players with the lure of trophies, medals and Champions League football needed to take the club on even further.

Adebayor edges closer

Emmanuel Adebayor's move to Manchester City looks to be edging ever closer with the news he has been granted a work permit.

The Arsenal striker attended a hearing in Manchester on Tuesday and Sky Sports News sources can now reveal there have been no complications with what is a routine process.

>>skysports.com

I'm not sure why a transfer would require a new work permit, as if one was granted when he arrived at Arsenal I would have thought that would remain valid should he move clubs. However, as expected, it doesn't appear that there were any problems obtaining it.

Should the deal be concluded (an announced) shortly, we could even see him feature out in South Africa for the Vodacom Challenge over the next week.

Strength in depth

Much is made of the strength in depth of the top four in comparison to rest of the Premier League, with an indication of this strength being the quality of your substitutes bench.

During 2008/09, the bench would routinely feature the likes of Hamman, Etuhu, Garrido, Evans, Caicedo, Gelson, Vassell and Glauber.

Fast forward to 2009/10, and as of today (and Adebayor and others could well yet arrive), the strongest line-up to me (with a 4-4-2/4-3-3 formation) looks to be; Given, Richards, Kompany, Onouha, Bridge, de Jong, Barry, Ireland, Robinho, Santa Cruz, Tevez.

This would leave the bench potentially as; Taylor, Zabaleta, Dunne, Johnson, Wright-Phillips, Petrov, Bellamy.

Some difference eh?

Tevez unveiled

“We are looking to strengthen areas of the team,” he confirmed. “Carlos is one of the top strikers in world football and his capture is a fantastic thing for the club and for the fans. He plays with his heart and has great love of football that is there for all to see.

“I want options of flexibility in terms of both personal and tactics. I want players who can produce moments of magic that can turn games. I now have those at the club and we will be working exceptionally hard to give City fans success.">>Mark Hughes.

"City came to me with a very good proposal," Tevez said, speaking via a translator. "They showed me how City has the ambition to become one of the biggest clubs in the world and I was very happy to join.">>Carlos Tevez

"I half-expected Carlos Tevez would be going a long time back," said the United boss. "I think he maybe did a deal around January because I spoke to him and gave him an offer on the night we played Inter Milan and he never came back to me.

"I phoned him on holiday and he never got back to me and I texted him twice and he never got back to me then either, so obviously he had made his mind up a long time ago.

"He was a good player and did well for us. But he obviously assessed the situation and wanted to go somewhere else.">>Alex Ferguson

Carlos Tevez was finally unvelied as a City player this afternoon after much speculation over the past few weeks.

Whether Tevez was truly sold on the 'vision' the club has, he felt unloved and underappreciated at Manchester United or whether he was offered all the oil in the Middle East, there is no escaping the fact that we have landed ourselves a very good player.

I know those who write about City are guilty of discussing whether certain players are 'Hughes players', but Tevez fits the profile in terms of commitment, workrate and desire. Tevez has been labelled as a mercenary in some quarters but whether it has been for West Ham or Manchester United, he has been nothing but wholehearted and appears to have a great attitude.

For all that United fans are trying to talk Tevez down (at the same time talking the option of Michael Owen up) he will add genuine quality and industry in attack and I don't see Tevez sitting on the bench too often this season as he will be a key part of the team.

It was confirmed that Tevez will wear the number 32 shirt for us, niftily displaying the new kit which is shortly to be launched. Dubious choice of headwear though.

Adebayor fee agreed

According to guardian.co.uk:

Manchester City are on the verge of completing a deal to sign Emmanuel Adebayor from Arsenal, the Guardian understands. The two clubs have agreed a fee, believed to be closer to Arsenal's asking price of £25m than City's original offer of £20m, and the striker is in Manchester discussing terms on a five-year contract worth between £150,000-170,000 a week.
Given the pace that this has moved at, it may not be too much of a stretch to suggestion a deal could be completed by the end of today.

UPDATE:

During the Tevez press conference, Mark Hughes admitted that discussions were in progress over Adebayor and it was also reported that he was due to attend a work permit hearing.

Bid for Adebayor reported

The mornings press is dominated by news that we have bid for Emmanuele Adebayor, with The Independent, Telegraph and Mail all reporting bids of between £20-£25 million for the Arsenal forward.

It does appear that Arsenal would be in selling mood, and Adebayor will in all likelihood be keen - seeing his wages likely doubled less than a year after his previous 50% hike in salary. I knew Adebayor wasn't the most universally liked player at Arsenal, but the weight of opinion against him has been surprising since the story broke and I don't think it is a case of sour grapes after the event like we saw when Gareth Barry moved from Aston Villa. There really does appear to be a genuine dislike for Adebayor amongst Arsenal fans.

A player with character issues doesn't seem to be the most obvious choice for Mark Hughes, and given the anti-Anelka feeling that developed in certain sections of the City crowd, he may not be set to become a terrace idol anytime soon. Hughes, if nothing else though, is a combative type, and I'm sure would back himself to manager players deemed to be troublemakers.

I don't have a problem with the signing in terms of fitting him into the team either. My concern with Adebayor is that he does not seem a natural goalscorer, but his record is a decent one and if nothing else, we would have plenty of variety and options. Although there is no European competition this season, we really do need to carry four top forwards, and given that our options in attack for the large part last season were a choice of Robinho plus one of Evans, Caicedo, Sturridge or a returning Bojinov, it is clear we needed to seriously upgrade.

UPDATE:

The BBC are reporting that we are in negotiations with Arsenal, taking the early morning reports one step further.

Tevez signs

Manchester City is delighted to announce that agreement has been reached with Carlos Tevez over a proposed move to the City of Manchester Stadium.

Personal terms with the 25-year-old have been concluded and the deal has been ratified by the Premier League and the Football Association.

After a medical Carlos, who has won the league title in every country in which he has played, is expected to sign a five-year contract and will meet up with his new teammates on their pre-season tour to South Africa. He will sport the number 32 shirt.

>>mcfc.co.uk

Whilst the transfer had been played out for the best of the past month in the media, due to the complex negotiations of the deal (to satisfy Premier League requirements over third party ownership) it was always likely to take longer to conclude than most transfers.

I'll post more in depth over the next day or so when I get more time, but there is no doubt that this is an excellent signing for us and our strikeforce for 2009/10 in comparison to last year bears no comparison.

Komany ruled out for start of the season

The Manchester City midfielder Vincent Kompany is scheduled for a foot operation that is certain to rule him out for the start of the Premier League campaign, the club have confirmed.

Kompany returned early from their training week in Bavaria and the manager, Mark Hughes,is resigned to losing his services to try to solve the problem of the Belgium international's nagging toe injury.

The midfielder endured painkilling injections and wore specially adapted boots in the second half of last season following his arrival from Hamburg.

>>guardian.co.uk

Whilst Kompany was a key part of the team last season, if we are to mount a serious challenge on the top four during 2009/10, the loss of key players is something that we have to contend with. During 2008/09, when key players were missing, we did suffer and the squad at times looked very light indeed.

Now, we do look stronger in most areas and we should be able to absorb the loss of Kompany given the alternatives we have (particularly in midfield). The worry for Kompany is that should he miss significant playing time and we start the season well, he could go from potential captain to on the outside.

Adebayor talks reported

Sky Sports News understands Manchester City have held talks with Arsenal over the possible signing of striker Emmanuel Adebayor.

Adebayor has been linked with a move away from Arsenal this summer, with a number of European clubs said to be interested in his services.

Sky Sports News' chief news reporter Bryan Swanson has been told talks between City and Arsenal are at the "early stages", with an initial fee discussed in the region of £20million, and no bid has yet been made.

>>skysports.com

It is funny how certain transfer reports can drag on and on, yet with others they can come to fruition relatively quickly before the press get a real hold on the story.

I'm always reticent to place too much emphasis on reports broken by Sky Sports, but it does sound as though there is something in this. It is a strange one though, as you wouldn't assume Adebayor would be tick the boxes for Mark Hughes. Talent wise, he can't been questioned and has a good record at Arsenal, but the reaction of Arsenal fans has been such that he isn't the most universally popular player.

If, as finally hoped, Tevez arrives this week, we are hardly short of options in attack so it isn't an obvious addition to the squad. For me, if we are adding in attack, preference would be for a real 'true' goalscorer.

I'm guessing this could potentially be a signing that really divides opinion.

Terry story gaining momentum

After the no-news being reported as news, the past twenty-four hours or so have seen a few articles surfacing that suggest a deal that would see John Terry actually sign for us may not be too wide of the mark.

There was a report in The Telegraph that suggest Terry may be disenchanted with Chelsea having not landing a marquee name in the transfer market so far, and that he was seeking 'clear the air' talks with Roman Abramovich.

Latterly, there were two reports that popped up late Saturday evening that indicated that despite earlier protestations, Chelsea may actually be considering an increased bid on the premise that (and Brian Reade summarises amusingly) that their record without Terry is no way different to with him in the side, at aged twenty-nine with a 'dodgy back' his best may be behind him and crucially, a transfee fee in excess of £30 million and not having to pay Terry an increase on his wages would be welcome.

Patrick Collins in The Mail backs this up:

The onus, it seems, is now on Chelsea to recognise their skipper's 'loyalty' if he should decide to stay. So they either pass up the chance of collecting £30m or risk distorting the stratospheric salary scale at Stamford Bridge. Naturally, Terry is saying nothing, as befits a man who holds all the cards.

Duncan Castles in The Times goes even further, suggesting moves could already be afoot in terms of negotiations:

For his part, Terry has asked football dealmaker Chris Nathaniel to help negotiate with City. Nathaniel already represents Robinho, the club’s current best-paid player, and Micah Richards. He has previously secured Terry a lucrative book deal, works extensively with his England teammate Rio Ferdinand, and last season fronted a Nigerian takeover bid for Newcastle United.

City remain confident that Terry will be their player before the new Premier League season begins. The England captain spent part of a recent holiday in Dubai with City manager Mark Hughes, and Hughes believes that Terry is unhappy with Chelsea’s failure to add top-class players to their squad and a lack of consultation over Carlo Ancelotti’s appointment.

It does seem unfathomable to think that Chelsea would consider selling Terry, their captain, England's captain, talismanic figure and club lynchpin. Yet perhaps there is a growing sense that along with Terry's silence, such a move may not be the unbelievable thought it may have been.

It would be some coup to pull this off, and the marquee and 'statement' signing (with apologies to Robinho) that ownership (not to mention Garry Cook have craved). Yet if Chelsea are prepared to let Terry go, should this ring any alarm bells given that the very top sides do not let their very top players leave at their peak and would possibly be a case of Caveat Emptor.

Interesting given the public announcement that we had shut the door on a possible deal for Samuel Eto'o, the club have left the suggestion of a further bid for Terry well and truly open. As I've said all along, one short statement from Terry would kill this stone dead. The longer the silence continues, the more the story gathers momentum.

UPDATE:

The News of The World are suggesting that the 'crisis talks' between Terry and Abramovich resulted in Terry requesting the opportunity to speak to us.

Johnson ready to return

“He started really well and I was impressed before he got injured. We haven’t seen enough of him in the Blue shirt. Hopefully that will change,” asserted the boss.

“We can see why the lofty labels were put on him because he has a lot of the attributes that would be really helpful to the team and he was a big loss last year. There were games in which he would have undoubtedly have had an impact.

“Hopefully we have now got to the bottom of the problem and he is more confident that his body will stand up to the rigours of Premier League football. Hopefully he is clear in his own mind that he is over the injuries.”

>>Mark Hughes on Michael Johnson.

Whilst comparisons to Colin Bell were a case of hyberole in the extreme, there is no doubt in my mind that Johnson is a player of huge talent - perhaps the best of the recent crop of graduates from the Academy.

His start to the 2007/08 was sensational, playing a huge role in our ascent to the top of the table and he displayed a real attacking intent and since being sidelined through injury it isn't a stretch to suggest his loss has been a factor in our stuttering performances since then.

Although the midfield and attack have been strengthened immensely over the past two seasons, I still don't think we have another player in the squad that matches Johnson's style and the hope surely is that he can have a full season injury free.

We could then be looking at a breakout season along the lines that we saw from Stephen Ireland this past season.

Eto'o deal off

Manchester City has confirmed that it has ended its interest in bringing Samuel Eto'o to the football Club. Speaking about the matter, club CEO, Garry Cook said, “Samuel Eto'o is undoubtedly a fine footballer but the circumstances surrounding him were such that the deal could not be completed.

“We now feel the time is right to pursue other avenues and we have a clear and strategic transfer plan, which we continue to follow.”

>>mcfc.co.uk

We may never know how realistic a signing Eto'o was, but the suggestion maybe not very close given we have pulled the plug on the day it was suggested he is to leave Barcelona. The assertion was that the club wished to impose a deadline on Eto'o to make a decision - completely valid and understandable if you are looking to put the pieces in place for 2009/10.

Given Eto'o was clearly not keen on making a decision within that timescale, he clearly did not have his heart set on the move so despite the talent he is, I have no issue with the deal being taken off the table.

Bringing in players of his calibre is clearly how the club want to move forward, and there is nothing wrong with this approach. But, if you are investing the sums of money reportedly offered to sign Eto'o then the player needs to be totally committed and buying into the 'project' being put to them. Eto'o obviously wasn't, maybe hoping for other (better?) offers to materialise, so for me the correct decision has been made here.

On a more positive note however, comes news that the protracted deal to sign Carlos Tevez is expected to be concluded during the early part of next week. Which for me more than makes up for the Eto'o news.

Gelson on the move

Only a couple of days after I posted this, the official site confirmed the departure of Gelson Fernandes to St. Ettiene today:

Manchester City can confirm that Gelson Fernandes has joined French side St Etienne for an undisclosed fee.

The Swiss midfielder moved to City from FC Sion in July 2007, and made his debut in the Carling Cup win over Bristol City a month later.

Gelson made 59 appearances for City, scoring four times, but he was increasingly used as a substitute after Mark Hughes took over as Blues’ boss.

He now moves to the southern part of France to the side managed by former Portsmouth manager Alain Perrin. His command of several languages helped make Gelson a popular member of the squad, and he goes with the best wishes for the future of everyone connected to Manchester City.

Despite becoming a bit of a crowd target last season, I did think it was worth persevering with him as he did show potential during his early time at the club. However, looking at the personnel in midfield we now have and where we are aiming to be it is clear that there would be no real role for Gelson moving forward and a permanent departure is the best option.

'I am a young player but I am very ambitious and I want to push myself to the highest level and play with the best players in the world. I believe that I can achieve big things here at Chelsea.

'But I am going to be very patient,' he qualifies, 'because I know there are world class players here and I am not going to get upset if I am not playing because it is very long season. There are going to be a lot of games and hopefully as the season goes on there are going to be opportunities so I can show the fans what abilities I have.

'I am not saying that Man City haven't got ambitions for the Champions League, or for any competition, but Chelsea is a fresh start for me and I believe that coming here will make me a better player.

'Man City is the past and Chelsea is the future for me.'

>>chelseafc.com

Not a huge amount of interest in his press conference (video via BBC Sport here) but what was noticeable was the lack of any discussion regarding the contract offer (or lack of it) from us and whether or not he considered re-signing at any stage.

Obviously the press conference was very much Chelsea centred, so it may be worth looking out for any comments from Mark Hughes or the club that come out the next day or so.

Gelson looking for a chance

"It is going to be a big year for me. I will not be looking to sit on the bench all the time," said the 22-year-old. I am aware that it is a squad game but I need to play."

>>skysports.com

Whilst his opening season was a good one with us, 2008/09 seemed to see Gelson Fernandes move from bright young prospect to official boo-boy. He was unfortunate in some respects as opportunities were limited once Hughes added Vincent Kompany, and latterly Nigel de Jong but his play hardly enamoured him to the masses. With the addition of Gareth Barry and return to fitness of Michael Johnson it is difficult to see where he does now fit into the side.

Rather than cast him off at this relative early stage in his career, would a wiser decision though to try and loan him out in the Premier League for 2009/10 to able to assess him and his progress at closer quarters?

Dunne interesting Sunderland

SUNDERLAND chairman Niall Quinn has admitted his interest in signing City captain Richard Dunne.

Dunne is City's longest-serving player but could become surplus to requirements at Eastlands this summer with boss Mark Hughes chasing a number of high-profile defensive signings, most recently being linked with Chelsea's John Terry.
>>MEN.

Said Niall Quinn:
"He is a player who is an excellent footballer but he is a Man City player until they say any different and we stand in a line," he said in the Daily Mail.

"We are not the only admirers but if there is a chink of light we will get through it if we can.

"We probably need a few men and spirited people to lift what we have and of course Richard Dunne would fit the bill."
It is strange to think how far Dunne's stock has fallen over the past season in particular. This time lalst year, we managed to fend off interest from Portsmouth and Tottenham (something that Hughes was very keen to do), yet the groundswell of opinion that formed about Dunne during 2008/09 was that his time had passed.

As good a servant and player (easy to forget four consecutive fans player of the year awards) Dunne has been, inevitably along the way where real progress is strived for, there will be casualties and sentiment can rarely be afforded.

If we are to add quality to the centre of defence, Dunne will undoubtedly be sidelined - something that could occur regardless if Vincent Kompany drops back - and given his age and that it is a World Cup year (with Ireland having a realistic shot at qualification) he may feel that he can ill afford to be sat on the sidelines for the most part.

I'm sure sides will covet him and that he will have plenty of options to pick from should he be made available. Unless we can add in that area though, he won't be going anywhere.

Jo joins Everton for 2009/10

The Brazilian forward Jo has agreed to become Everton's first signing of the summer on a season-long loan deal from Manchester City.

Jo spent the second half of last season on loan at Goodison Park, scoring five goals in 12 appearances for David Moyes's side, and was keen to remain on Merseyside having endured a torrid time at City since his £18m move from CSKA Moscow.

>>guardian.co.uk

Whilst I'm sure Mark Hughes would willingly pack Jo's bags and take him to the airport himself if it meant being able to sell him, there realistically isn't a market for a player a year into a £19 million deal on what will not be inconsiderable wages.

Any thoughts that his half season at Everton may be designed to help him adapt to the Premier League, and him to come back and command a place in the side were clearly wide of the mark. Whilst he made an impact on his debut, I don't think he showed Hughes enough to force his way back into his thinking and a season long loan was clearly the best option for all concerned at this stage.

And now Lucio?

Skysports.com understands that officials from Manchester City have travelled to Germany in a bid to push through a deal for Bayern Munich defender Lucio.

The cash-rich Eastlands outfit are in the market for a new central defender as they look to establish themselves as a force in domestic and continental competition.

>>skysports.com

A little out of nowhere this one, with recent focus on Terry, Lescott and Maicon in terms of talk for defensive reinforcements.

If a delegation has travelled then you would imagine discussions would be at an advanced stage. I'm not sure that Bayern would be overly keen to sell, yet given his age (31) a sizeable bid may be difficult to resist.

In terms of age, he doesn't quite fit Hughes's ideal template and maye his best days are behind, yet if Lescott or Terry are dead-ends then he may well be a useful short-term pick up.

City blogs

Since the back end of last season, one thing that has been noticeable is the number of City blogs that have sprung up. As a club, we used to be really under-represented in the blogging world but now have some really good and varied blogs out there.

With that in mind, I've updated the links (on the right hand side) here on Bitter on Blue to show a seperate City blogs section from the existing City links section.

Terry 'not for sale'

"I think that Terry is a symbol of the team," he said. "Naturally he will be the captain next time; he says he wants to be at Chelsea next season and we want to keep him forever. There is no price – he will be captain of Chelsea forever.

"There is no problem. For him, for us, the story continues for Chelsea. For captain I would like to have Terry. He is very close to [Paolo] Maldini in professionalism and I would like to keep him as captain."
>>Carlo Ancelotti.

It was of course Carlo Ancelotti's first press conference as Chelsea manager this morning, and inevitably the focus would be on the subject of John Terry's future.

The press this morning (on the back of the Sunday's) was full of the suggestion that Terry could indeed be tempted by a move. A key point was that it was reported that Chelsea themselves could not be keen on a deal, possibly due to being less than enamoured with Terry himself and the belief he could be using our interest as leverage for a new (and much improved) deal.

Whilst there has still been on official word from Terry himself, Ancelotti's comments appear to be unequivocal in their tone and that (as thought) Chelsea are not willing to entertain the possibility of letting Terry leave.

We could of course go back in with a further bid for him, but clearly an improved offer to Chelsea is not likely to see them waver. Any deal does now seem to be dead in the water and it really would take a huge announcement from Terry to resurrect anything - something that is extrememely unlikely.

Tevez talks of move

"If I play for Manchester City I don't think the United fans will feel I am a traitor.

"They have to remember that at least as far as I know I have been thrown out of the club and I have to study the best offers available."
>>MEN.

One thing that the Terry story has done is taken the focus off the prolonged pursuit of Carlos Tevez. I still think Tevez signs, yet clearly hoped for the deal to have been completed by now as it does allow for the possibility of other clubs to come in at the eleventh hour.

However, he did have an extended end to the season on international duty so his return may well be delayed due to this. The first pre-season game in South Africa is in thirteen days time (the 18th) and the hope I'm sure is that he will be in place for this.

A further bid for Terry?

The Independent this morning suggests we could well try again for John Terry, raising our offer to £40 million pounds and making him the first £300,000 a week footballer:

Manchester City's pursuit of John Terry is not over and they are now considering increasing the pressure on Chelsea with a second bid for the England captain in excess of the £30m deal that was rejected on Thursday night. Chelsea are opposed to losing their captain but it is understood that Terry could yet opt to leave.
The article also states that there may be some indication that Terry at the very least would be open to discussions:
There is no doubt that City's executive chairman, Garry Cook, would not have made the offer to Chelsea had he not been receiving some encouragement that Terry would be amenable to a move. As a former Chelsea player, the City manager Mark Hughes has close contacts with his ex-club, including those individuals close to the players.
If a firm offer hadn't been made for Terry, this would strike you as a classic summer transfer non-story. The press could now well be dragging this out for all the column inches it's worth, but maybe, just maybe there may actually be a degree of truth to it.

I still maintain that I would be amazed if this offer ever amounted to anything, yet perhaps there has been encouragement of some sort from Terry in which case expect a follow up bid to materialise.

Of course, on the other hand it could all be a retaliatory gesture designed to hack Chelsea off over the Daniel Sturridge affair.

Would Michael Owen have been a good signing?

I've posted more in depth on Michael Owen over at Football Rants, and whilst the signing has potential (and definitely beneficial for Owen) I do think that the press would have really put the knife into him had he landed at Hull or Stoke as opposed to the move being a great opportunity.

Whilst we are still believed to be pursuing Carlos Tevez and/or Samuel Eto'o, I can't help but wonder if Owen would have been a great fit in our line-up with the attacking prowess that we have. Looking at the deal, it was reported as being a two-year contract at £40,000 per week so would not have represented a huge gamble on our part.

The lack of a true goalscorer was one of our failings last season and whilst the signing of Santa Cruz should address this, would Owen have been worth a gamble?

Chelsea confirm Sturridge signing

Chelsea Football Club is delighted to confirm that Daniel Sturridge has agreed to join the club on a four-year contract.

He will join the first team squad for pre-season training next week when the players return from their summer break.

The 19-year-old previously played for Manchester City, where he first burst onto the first team scene in the 2007/08 season, scoring twice in four days in January for Sven Goran Eriksson's side, including an important equaliser at Derby County to earn a point.

>>chelseafc.com

No great surprise and there has been plenty said about the whole Sturridge 'situation' before. All that remains is to have the fee agreed - either by tribunal or if both clubs can settle on a figure.

I'll keep my eyes on this for any official comments from either Sturridge or the club about the move.

Terry bid rejected

It was confirmed on chelseafc.com that we have had a bid for John Terry turned down. Whilst there were reports in January that we had tentatively enquired as to his potential availability, a concerete offer has clearly now been made (with some suggestion that we used the ruse of Sturridge negotitations to the spring the formal offer on a 'stunned' Peter Kenyon).

Despite being rebuffed, it is reported that we are set to go back in with a further bid. It does surprise me however as whilst we can flex some muscle to bring Barry and Santa Cruz to the club it is a different scenario entirely with Terry. Notwithstanding that there is a school of thought that actually suggests Terry benefits from having played alongside the likes of Carvalho, if we are talking £18 million for Joleon Lescott, is the region of £30 million way too low.

For me, whilst every player has his price, it has to be at the right time. Terry is a lynchpin and appears wedded to Chelsea and is the embodiment of the modern day Chelsea (both good and bad). I just don't see them even contemplating a deal regardless of what offer we put on the table. Having been rebuffed in January when the position at Chelsea was less stable (with Terry reportedly butting heads with Scolari), I fail to see the logic in going after him once again and surely we are better pursuing targets elsewhere.

Academy to expand globally

The major success story of the past decade at the club has undoubtedly been the emergence of the Academy, and the procession of players brought through to senior leve, which shows no sign of abating.

The club today announced plans to expand the Academy on a global scale, with an initial Academy in Abu Dhabi, followed by a venture into America. I posted back in 2006 about the seeming lack of vision that the club had in terms of scouting at the time but it does appear that the club have changed philosophy and we have already seen a handful of additions of younger players from Europe - something that all succesful sides have done for some time.

Possibly the most positive aspect of this is that Jim Cassell, the architect of the success of the Academy will oversee the initiative rather than being ushered aside by a new arrival. The Academy has more than paid for itself since being set up in its current guise and if this success can be replicated on a wider scale, it is a clearly a win-win situation.

Vassell mobbed in Turkey

This is a great picture just for the sheer bemusement on Vassell's face.

I had imagined that Vassell would likely end up at a top level Championship side (or even one of the promoted clubs) but maybe he fancied the challenge of playing abroad at this stage of his career.

It is easy to dismiss his time at City, but when he arrived at the club he was not far removed from the England set up and had a decent reputation. He did arrive at a time when we were struggling and perhaps was not up to taking on the kind of responsibility demanded of him. It may have also have not helped that he only seemed able to find the net against Aston Villa.

During his latter days at the club he often found himself out on the right, or during the second half of 2008/09 out of the side completely. I'm not sure many of us had heard of Ankaragucu, but it might be one more side to look out for next season.

Club announce Endemol partnership

English Premier League club Manchester City has signed a long-term partnership with Endemol Sport, a division of the TV production company Endemol - famous for producing the globe-spanning Big Brother programme.

Endemol Sport will be tasked with developing schemes to use television to build City’s brand throughout the world, as well as relaunching the club website, which will be available in English and Arabic. City are owned by the ruling family of Abu Dhabi. However, Endemol insists the Middle East is not its only target: “The Middle East is very important for obvious reasons and we’ll also target Asia and Latin America,“ said Gregg Oldfield, joint managing director at Endemol Sport.

New website launched

The new website was finally launched today, and all appears to now be working following the teething problems they experienced first thing.

As for the look of the site, it looks fine. I've never been a huge user of the website anyway (mainly using it for ticket and fixture news). It does look a lot cleaner looking than the old site but whether it was worth the hype ahead of the launch I'm not too sure.

Players released

CITY have confirmed the list of players released from the club.

Danny Mills, Daniel Sturridge, Darius Vassell, Glauber Berti, Didi Hamann and Michael Ball will all be playing their football away from Eastlands next season. Goalkeeper Richard Martin has gone, report www.mcfc.co.uk as have youngsters Matthew Brown, Ian Daly, Gregor Hartley, Ben Morris, Curtis Obeng, Chris Ramsey and Angelos Tsiaklis.
>>MEN.

No surprise with the names of Mills, Vassell, Glauber, Hamman or Ball on the list. Quite cleary none have any future with the club given the changes we have undergone the past couple of seasons.

It is worth noting though that when Vassell, Hamman and Ball arrived at the club they were very much components of the squad at that time. Vassell and Ball in particular played key roles when they first arrived before being marginalised during their latter days. Hamman's time was perhaps blighted through injury yet had a very big season in 2007/08 where he showed the form that he displayed during his days at Liverpool.

Whilst not unexpected (and the move to Chelsea will now surely be imminent), it also a very understated exit for Sturridge.

As for Danny Mills, the less said the better.

Sheikh Mansour

One of the features carried on the new official site (not the smoothest) of launches incidentally) today was an interview with club owner, Sheikh Mansour. The main thread has been picked up in the press and a full transcript can be found at mcfc.co.uk.

The point that stood out for me was his talk of the long term project - a theme that has been constant since the new owners came on board:

We continue to be very clear in regard to our expectations and ambitions: We are competitors. We are here to win and to build a club that will be in a position to win trophies. That said, we know that will take time, and this is where a patient and pragmatic approach is essential. We know what we want and are very clear on our internal targets. What we have done in the last ten months sets the tone of the way we will do things very clearly.
They have been very impressive in their approach so far, and they clearly see the value of long term strategy rather than throwing money around for the sake of a quick fix.

Thankfully, we appear to be in good hands.

Hughes on Eto'o and Tevez

"We'll all have to be patient. Every transfer is different - we were able to do the Gareth Barry deal very quickly, the one for Roque [Santa Cruz] was long-winded. We have to accept there may be others that will take a little bit of time.

"There is always an element of frustration when you can't conclude deals quickly. But we will give every deal the patience we feel it deserves. If we get to a point where we feel something is not going to happen, that's the time we move away. We've done that in the past."

Vassell heading to Turkey

Darius Vassell has travelled to Turkey to hold talks with Ankaragucu over a prospective move to the Super Lig side. The former England international appears to have no future at Manchester City with manager Mark Hughes linked with a host of big-name signings.
